Sails are cut flat and then made to hold a curve. That is the whole trade.
We have been cutting on the same floor since 1974. The plotter is new, the loft is not, and the person who checks every panel before it goes out has been doing it for twenty-nine years.
Repairs come back to us from boats we built sails for in the eighties. We would rather patch one than sell you a replacement, which is a poor business model and the reason we are still here.
Nothing here is signature. Everything here is somebody's.
We do not sell a house scent. Every formula in the book was made for one person, and roughly forty of them have since been made a second time for somebody who smelled it on a friend.
A book that will not open flat is a book that will not be read twice
We sew on tapes, round the spine and case in by hand. It costs more than perfect binding and it is the only reason a book survives a century on a shelf.
Rebinding is most of the work. Bring in something falling apart and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth the money or whether you should simply buy another copy.
Forged, ground, and sharpened three times before it leaves
Carbon steel, because it takes an edge stainless cannot and because a patina is not a fault. It will discolour in a week and be better for it.
Glass remembers every second it spends off the pipe
Which is why two pieces from the same batch are never quite the same weight. We stopped apologising for it a long time ago and started listing it as the reason to buy.
The hot shop is open to visitors on Thursdays. Stand behind the line, ask anything, and expect it to be louder and far hotter than you imagined.
