Leather is skin: it dries out, and dry leather cracks. Brush the dust off after each wear, and condition every six months — more if you're walking in rain and salt.
Cedar shoe trees do two jobs: they pull moisture out and hold the shape while the leather dries. Never dry boots on a radiator; the heat shrinks the fibres and the sole separates.
